Shoes and Hoves Staff Picked by Vimeo
A Vimeo Staff Pick is one of the platform’s most prestigious professional distinctions. Awarded by Vimeo’s editorial team, it highlights films selected for their outstanding artistic quality, originality, directorial vision, or technical achievement. Entirely curator-driven, the Staff Pick status is independent of submissions, entry fees, or view counts.
One of the two recently selected short animations is Viktória Traub‘s Shoes and Hooves (2024, Pi Production), which premiered internationally at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival before embarking on a successful festival journey. The film competed in Viborg, screened in Ottawa, and ultimately returned from the Guanajuato International Film Festival with the Best Animation Award. The 2D animated short combines fantasy and intimate character drama, exploring themes of desire, identity, and self-acceptance through a visually rich world inhabited by human–animal hybrid figures.
The other selected film by Letterboxd and Vimeo is Flóra Anna Buda’s 27 (2023, Miyu Productions / Boddah). The film won the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival, and the director was invited to take part in the festival’s prestigious 49th Résidence Program. 27 is a raw, visually striking portrait of early adulthood, capturing the tensions of living between dependence and independence, control and excess, safety and risk.
These two works showcase the fearless storytelling and contemporary relevance of Hungarian animation (both filmmakers graduated from the animation program at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design) — rooted in strong auteur traditions, and resonant across cultural boundaries.
