FRISS KAKAS 2026: Two Days with the Next Generation of Animation Talent — International Focus and Guest Experts
On January 16–17, 2026, the Animation program of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME Anim), in collaboration with Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival, presented the 4th edition of Friss Kakas Animation Film Days. The event took place at MOME’s Zugliget campus and at Toldi Cinema, bringing together emerging talents, established professionals, and key international figures from the global animation scene. A major highlight of the 2026 edition was its strong international professional focus.
On 16 January, the MOME Auditorium hosted a full-day industry program offering insight into the animation career path – from university admission to international festival circulation. Alongside MOME faculty and Hungarian creators, the event welcomed international festival representatives and curators, providing rare behind-the-scenes perspectives on global selection processes.
A dedicated panel discussion brought together curators from leading European festivals: Thomas Renoldner (Vienna Shorts), Nina de Gelder (Fest Anča), and Giulio Vita (La Guarimba International Film Festival). The discussion revolved around the following questions: How do programmers navigate the overwhelming number of submissions? What helps a film stand out internationally? And how is the audience for short animated films changing in the age of streaming platforms and TikTok?
The day’s keynote event was a masterclass by Alice Saey, the internationally acclaimed French–Dutch graphic artist and animation director. Saey introduced her artistic practice, visual language, and recent festival successes, offering inspiration to both students and professionals. Her masterclass also marked the opening of the 20-hour Comic Marathon, with completed works reviewed and awarded by an international professional jury the following day.
On 17 January, Friss Kakas presented a rich screening program showcasing the latest Hungarian and international animation works. The fresh MOME Anim graduation films were presented on the big screen for the very first time. Created by the class of 2025, the eight short films selected for this premiere reflected a remarkable diversity in both form and subject, spanning stop motion, 3D, cut-out, and 2D animation. The international selection titled School Across Borders featured recent graduate films from partner institutions across Europe and East Asia. Additional thematic blocks explored contemporary stop-motion trends, animated music videos, and showcased films by MOME Anim instructors. A dedicated retrospective honored the legacy of Ferenc Sajdik, whose iconic characters shaped generations of Hungarian animation.
With its blend of premieres, international guests, professional insight, and emerging voices, Friss Kakas 2026 offered a unique meeting point for anyone interested in the future of animation – locally rooted, yet unmistakably international.
