Animating Sound: House of Music Hungary Joins Annecy 2025

House of Music Hungary

The House of Music Hungary offers visitors of all ages a personal connection to the world of sound in an environment that redefines the concept of cultural spaces. Music takes shape in many forms across the building’s three levels: exhibitions on the underground floor, concerts on the ground floor, and educational programs on the upper floor.

Guest of Honor

Hungary will be the official Guest of Honour at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, celebrating 110 years of Hungarian animation. To mark the occasion, the National Film Institute (NFI) will install a special dome in the heart of the festival to showcase Hungarian creativity, with the House of Music Hungary serving as a key content partner.

The 360-degree Sound Dome in Budapest features a hemispherical projection space equipped with a state-of-the-art 40-channel ambisonic sound system – the only one of its kind in Europe. It presents new immersive films every month. The NFI has curated a selection of these to be screened in Annecy, offering visitors a unique experience. These and many other productions are available year-round in the Sound Dome at the House of Music Hungary.

Three Pillars

Dedicated to preserving and presenting the values of traditional, popular, and classical music, the House of Music promotes experience-based learning and entertainment-driven education. Its three pillars – exhibitions, concerts, and music outreach – complement one another to create a diverse and inspiring cultural program.

On the underground level, the permanent exhibition Dimensions of Sound explores the history of Hungarian and European music. Temporary exhibitions have included The Song Was Written for Us, which examined Hungarian pop music from 1957 to the regime change, and Divas & Icons from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. The current exhibition, LISTEN – World is Music, presents musical traditions from around the globe. Also on this level, the Creative Sound Space invites hands-on discovery with uniquely designed instruments, encouraging visitors to explore how sound becomes music.

The ground floor is home to live performances and workshops featuring both Hungarian and international artists. During the summer, the Open-Air Stage brings our core mission – the presentation of music – outdoors, making it accessible to all visitors.

On the upper floor, the Pop Cultural Club Library – one of a kind in Hungary – offers digital collections and programs focused on pop, jazz, and traditional music. Music education sessions introduce school-aged children to the world of music through engaging, playful experiences.
