Le lapin d’Annecy goes Hungarian – Reflections on the Hungarian Tribute Program

When we embarked on organizing the Guest Country Program in the fall of 2024, our ambition was nothing less than to show the world that Hungarian animation has a rich past, a vibrant present, and an exceptionally promising future. Being featured as a guest of honor country at our favorite festival is a unique opportunity – but also a significant responsibility, which we embraced through collective effort.

The creation of the program was a true collaboration between animation artists, studios, producers, educational institutions, and professional organizations. Our goal was not only to represent Hungarian animation with dignity but to launch initiatives that would have a lasting impact beyond the festival itself.

Among these are the launch of a new industry website and the first Hungarian animation pitch forum, as well as the strengthening of ties between international and Hungarian animation professionals. This year, our presence will be felt not only in the cinemas but throughout the city – through public art exhibitions, gallery programs, and an immersive new screening venue, the Annecy Hungarian Dome experiences.

We also have a strong presence at the MIFA industry market, where we are showcasing the creative and business potential of the Hungarian animation sector with our largest-ever stand. Particular emphasis is placed on highlighting emerging talent, the future of education, and fostering international collaboration.

Special thanks go to my close colleagues, the Hungarian Tribute Program organising team, the Hungarian National Film Institute, the Hungarian animation community, artists, producers, the House of Music, the National Film Archive, the Friss Hús team, the Liszt Institute in Paris, the City of Annecy, the Polidomes, and above all the amazing Annecy team – especially Raphaël Cazuhac from CITIA, whose support made even the seemingly impossible possible.

This tribute program is a shared success — a testament to the power of multi-stakeholder cooperation, and a clear sign that Hungarian animation is ready to strengthen its role as a creative force on the global stage. We are proud of this vibrant community – and can’t wait for the audience in Annecy to experience how WE DRAW TO CONNECT
